Anna, Emma, Kerri and Eilidh Play at a Ceilidh

Programme Outline

Four girls get ready to perform at a ceilidh in the Outer Hebrides. The girls travel to the community hall through the landscape that inspires their music – the sea, the beach, the fishing boats and ferry. The band has three fiddles, a guitar, tambourine and singer. They practise their instruments, check the words and work out a running order for the songs. The fiddle players tune their instruments, tightening strings and trading notes with each other.

The song they perform has words in Gaelic. Friends, family and neighbours come together for a step dance, moving from lines into pairs and then changing partners. As the sun sinks into the ocean and the sea gulls wheel in the windy sky, the band plays on.
