Aims & Learning Outcomes

The programme aims to:

  • Explore the relationship between decimals, fractions and percentages.
  • Demonstrate a simple example of the technique of trial and improvement.
  • Extend understanding of the system of place value for decimal fractions.
  • Provide entertaining lesson material, with opportunities for further exploration.
  • Demonstrate a practical problem-solving approach

After watching the programme, students should:

  • Appreciate the equivalence of numbers expressed as fractions, decimals or percentages.
  • Understand the meaning of place value for decimal fractions, particularly tenths and hundredths.
  • Be aware that the decimal and fractional forms of a number are related, be able to convert between them, and recognise useful decimal and percentage equivalents for commonly used fractions.
  • Appreciate that problems can be solved to varying degrees of accuracy.
  • Recognise the benefits of adopting a systematic approach to guessing a value, and see the need for recording and monitoring results.
  • Understand the use of a scale to record decimal values.
  • Be familiar with the language and symbolism used to discuss numbers that are ‘between’ whole numbers.
