To know about and understand the policy of segregation and 'separate but equal', and its impact on American society, particularly the 'black' population.

To identify and analyse the relationship between slavery, segregation, discrimination and racism, including contemporary racism.

To know about and understand key events in the struggle to achieve civil rights in America.

To understand the significance of the role of individual activists in achieving civil rights in America.

To know about and appreciate the diverse contributions made by different ethnic groups to American society.

To identify and analyse propaganda directed at the 'black' people of America, particularly during the Second World War.

To identify change and continuity in the experiences of 'black' people across America in the 20th century.

To use films, documentaries and newsreels about issues of 'race' critically and in their historical context.

To make links and connections between the experiences of 'black' people in America and in Britain.
