  • To know about and understand the policy of segregation and 'separate but equal', and its impact on American society, particularly the 'black' population.
  • To identify and analyse the relationship between slavery, segregation, discrimination and racism, including contemporary racism.
  • To know about and understand key events in the struggle to achieve civil rights in America.
  • To understand the significance of the role of individual activists in achieving civil rights in America.
  • To know about and appreciate the diverse contributions made by different ethnic groups to American society.
  • To identify and analyse propaganda directed at the 'black' people of America, particularly during the Second World War.
  • To identify change and continuity in the experiences of 'black' people across America in the 20th century.
  • To use films, documentaries and newsreels about issues of 'race' critically and in their historical context.
  • To make links and connections between the experiences of 'black' people in America and in Britain.
