Ten students from the participating schools arrive at ITN to spend two days preparing for and producing the Breaking the News bulletin. They are welcomed by Nina Harrison from Channel 4 News who briefs them on the tasks ahead.
The students view the local news stories submitted by the schools. Gurpreet Billan, the student programme editor, leads the discussion and the students vote for the two stories that will feature in full in the final bulletin - 'Fox Hunting' from Thomas Adams School and 'Operation Bus Tag' from The Chadwell Heath Foundation School.
The team also has to select two news features for the bulletin. Each school had used ITN rushes to produce either a story about 'Green Britain' or one about 'Teenagers'. Martin Fewell, deputy editor of Channel 4 News, watches the features with the students and discusses them afterwards. The students vote for 'Teenage Pregnancy' made by The Grays School Media Arts College and 'Climate for Change' made by Sharnbrook Upper School.
At the end of the day, Nina hands out a 'prospects' list - details of stories which are known to be happening the next day. There may be ideas for tomorrow's on-the-day story. The students run through the main stories - a court case, an energy story (which Gurpreet points out is similar to the news feature story they have just chosen), avian flu and the 150th anniversary of the package holiday.
