Breaking the News

guidance for students

Jon Snow presenting the news, cameraman filming, new presenter

This website is a unique opportunity to learn how TV news is produced by one of the world's leading news organisations. By following ITN's Channel 4 News team over a day and watching interviews with journalists with questions asked by students who have taken part in a news simulation activity, you will find out exactly what is involved.

Also, by using the eSEQ tool you will gain experience of how digitisation has dramatically speeded up the process of editing and sequencing video, and get to work with actual unedited footage to create your own stories.

In the course included on the site, you will learn how to analyse the news, find out what it's like to work as a journalist and consider the importance of news in our society. This could be done by dry, potentially boring, theory lectures. What this course tries to do is mix theory and practice and to give you real-life experience, skills and interests which will equip you for the future.
