Breaking the News

who's who in the newsroom

presenter: Jon Snow

Jon Snow says that there is no easy way of summing up the evening news| starts with a meeting in the morning where presenters, reporters and everybody else who is part of making the news discuss potential stories.

Throughout the day, Jon keeps abreast of what is happening by watching other TV channels, making phone calls and surfing the net. He no longer writes down questions before interviewing people| on air, having found that he never listens to the answers they give if he is following a script. Being able to improvise is a useful skill to have when the programme changes| while on air. In June 2003, Tony Blair's Director of Communications and Strategy, Alistair Campbell, turned up out of the blue to give an exclusive interview about the government's row with the BBC. The live studio talk that ensued ended up taking 25 minutes, throwing out the rest of the day's content.

target audience| is anybody between 14 and 90 - people like you and me - who want to know what is happening and why.

Channel 4 News readers are told never to wear anything that is too colourful in the studio, but the story of Jon's ties| is a bright one: recently one of them sold at a charity auction for £600.
