Graphics are a key element of a news programme, whether to introduce the show, to emphasise or illustrate a point or to act as transitions between different segments. Channel 4 News has an in-house graphic design team of four whose the London bombers| on July 7 from Leeds to Luton. The process involved commissioning a map from the 3-D graphics department that zoomed into specific locations and then incorporating footage from the bombings to create a visually pleasing package that conveyed the necessary information.
In addition to graphics commissioned daily, the graphic design team can also be asked to work on longer term projects such as designing the title sequence of the programme. It must relate to the revamping the look| every three to four years is a huge job but because of the well-crafted design it could last even longer without looking stale or outdated.
Mike became a graphic designer| after doing a BA Honours in graphic design at university, specialising in television graphics and animation. This prepared him well for his current role which requires a good knowledge of moving image design, software like Photoshop, Illustrator and After Effects and Quantel TV graphics packages. For Mike, the most positive feedback| from reporters and producers or to produce something that he is especially proud of.
