Breaking the News

news technology

3 views of computer screens showing news software

Technology in the newsroom is making the news production process more and more efficient. A TV news programme needs to report the latest news from all around the world, which requires information and pictures to get to the newsroom, and journalists to make this information accessible, as quickly as possible.

Thanks to digital technology, video tapes are needed less and less, since pictures sent to the news station are digitised and placed on a server. Video footage can also be sent over the internet, and as broadband speeds get faster, satellite feeds will seldom be necessary.

The job of journalists has also been revolutionised by ENPS: a computer system that allows them to access newswires with shot lists, write scripts, read and add to the running order of the programme and look at what items are scheduled for future shows.
