Breaking the News

masterclasses

Lucy Manning, reporter

Lucy Manning
Masterclass 1

Masterclasses give students the chance to better understand the processes involved in making the news by putting their questions to Channel 4 newsroom staff.

The four Masterclasses each relate to a course unit and enhance understanding of the processes involved in making the news. The masterclasses are given by a reporter, programme editor, presenter and newsbelt producer who respond to questions sent in by schools involved in the making of the Breaking the News bulletin.

Masterclass 1|

Analysing TV news with reporter Lucy Manning.

Course Unit 1 investigates the definition of a news story, what makes a story newsworthy and news as a genre.

The masterclass is a chance to find out more about how a reporter decides what stories to follow and how he/she makes decisions throughout the day about what to include.

Masterclass 2|

Working in TV journalism with programme editor Julie Hulme.

Course Unit 2 investigates the aims of TV journalism and the social responsibility of news.

The masterclass is a chance to find out more about what the programme editor hopes the news programme will achieve, and what balances are in place to ensure that the news produced is objective and fair.

Masterclass 3|

News and society with presenter Alex Thomson.

Course Unit 3 investigates news values and how they are presented to viewers. It explores issues such as the impact of news on viewers and the role of news in society.

The masterclass is a chance to find out from a presenter what it's like to present the news, how news values are taken into account and some of the problems that can arise as a programme goes live on air.

Masterclass 4|

Producing TV news with newsbelt producer Bridgid Nzekwu.

Course Unit 4 is a practical session about preparing and editing material for a news bulletin and evaluating decisions that are made.

The masterclass is a chance to find out more about how the news team produces the news.
