Breaking the News

a day in the newsroom

on air - part 2

19:28, 19:45

To watch these videos you need Windows Media Player.

After the break, it's Victoria and Naga's fuel protest story. Jon reads the lead-in to the story. The headline on the video wall says 'Fading Protests'.| The story is complete apart from the name captions (Astons) for the three people who speak in vision in the package - Andrew Spence, Ray Holloway and Victoria Macdonald. The PA counts in the Astons. It's a moment for Ed Fraser to rearrange the stories in the second newsbelt - he tells Bridgid via talkback that he has changed the story order.

For the disco| about the psychology of panic buying at the end of the show (Ed Fraser's light item), there is one guest (Richard Porter of Evo Magazine) in the studio and another, the psychologist Oliver James, live from his home in Oxfordshire. There is a problem with Oliver James's microphone and the studio director suggests interviewing the studio guest until the microphone is fixed. Ed tells Jon that he may have to 'split the disco' - interview one guest after the other. But the microphone is fixed just in time and there is a three-way discussion.

Ed uses talkback to prompt Jon to make comments and to tell him to ask the studio guest a quick last question. It looks like time is running out but Jon manages to slip in a final question with only a five second overrun. As the closing titles are counted in, the studio director reminds Jon to 'chat to the guest'. It's all over and Ed thanks everyone in the studio and the gallery.
