a day in the newsroom

newsbelt update

13:54, 13:58

To watch these videos you need Windows Media Player.

It's 13:54: the noon Channel 4 news bulletin is out of the way and David Weisbloom, the newsbelt producer, now has to work on the two evening newsbelts.| Some of the four or five stories from the noon newsbelt may be re-broadcast on the evening programme, updated where necessary, but clearly David has to find more stories. He is joined by Bridgid Nzekwu, the second presenter on the evening programme, who spends the afternoon working with David to produce stories for the newsbelt.

One of the stories David is looking at is about the Conservative leadership election. Two contenders, Ken Clarke and David Davis, have given speeches today and David is about to look up agency reports of the speeches on ENPS in order to write a short piece.

Bridgid is looking for a story with good pictures to fill in gaps in the newsbelt and has found an agency story about a new hurricane, Ophelia, which is threatening the coast of Virginia in the USA.

Bridgid shows how she accesses the agency's shot list of the Hurricane Ophelia| story on ENPS. She can view a list of the pictures the agency has sent and then watch them using Browse. She's looking for dramatic shots and is pleased with video of heavy seas.

Knowing the pictures she can use, Bridgid writes a script, reading aloud as she writes. She will be the one to present the newsbelt stories so she needs to make sure the script flows. She then edits the shots into a sequence which is called an 'underlay' - it will play as she reads the script.
