Breaking the News

a day in the newsroom

morning meeting

A typical day in the newsroom kicks off with a morning meeting| at 09:30 in the office shared by Jim Gray, the editor of Channel 4 News and Martin Fewell, the deputy editor. Everyone picks up a copy of the prospects for the day as they go in. The programme editor for today, Ed Fraser, outlines his plan for the evening bulletin and the team engages in lively discussion about individual stories and the key issues of the day. Ed talks about the angle he is proposing to take on the lead story - the UN World Summit - and Jon Snow adds his views on the watering down of the millennium goals. Bids are already in to interview Bob Geldof, Bono and Jack Straw.

Fuel protests| are also on the day's agenda but because there is no sign of any significant protest, the angle of the story will have to change. Martin Fewell suggests that the interesting issue is the psychology of fear and what causes panic buying of fuel. Ed mentions Andrew Spence, a key figure in the previous fuel protest, as an important person to speak to.

Ed runs through the rest of the news prospects| for the day. He reports that the team in Belfast captured a bomb blast on camera last night and that there has been a huge bomb explosion in Iraq. This leads to questions about another piece from Iraq which international correspondent Lindsey Hilsum has been preparing in London. She describes her story which will feature exclusive footage from Saddam Hussein's cameraman. There's also a report due from Alex Thomson in Afghanistan. Jon Snow worries that there is no light relief in the programme at this stage.
