Forum buzz: what makes you see red?

Posted: 13-03-08

This week's theme is things (and programmes) that get you rattled. Forum Buzz looks at The Woman Who Stops Traffic; Cutting Edge: Phone Rage; Willie's Wonky Chocolate Factory; Stephen Hawking: Master of the Universe; The Big Bang Theory; Reaper; Richard and Judy; Deal or No Deal.

If you missed them, most Channel 4 shows are free for 30 days on 4oD.
Give your opinions on these shows (or any other C4 show) below.

The debate on the future of Channel 4 was thrown open to the C4 forums this week as Andy Duncan, chief executive, spelled out plans Thursday, then did an online Q&A. Give your opinion on the future of the channel here.

Car rage
Following her success in Marlow, Kris Murrin aka The Woman Who Stops Traffic, has been taking on car drivers in Boston and Durham. It’s clear from this debate in the Green Forum that the programme has left some people in Boston, in particular, pretty rattled.

Phone rage
Talking of getting rattled, the Cutting Edge documentary on Phone Rage, has got people on both ends of the phone discussing the merits of the programme in The TV Show Forum. The other recent Cutting Edge Pramface Babies, about young mothers, had the Big Brother forum wondering where the word ‘Pramface’ came from and whether it is derogatory.

Chocolate highs and lows
Willie's Wonky Chocolate Factory encouraged folks in the Food Forum to discuss: what’s the best chocolate in the world, while other forum members found Willie incredibly irritating.
Meanwhile the voice of the narrator put off a few viewers of The Fake Trade according to this thread in Discuss4 Forum.

Image shows physicist Stephen Hawking: Master of the Universe
Big bang theory
He may not have all the answers on chocolate, but he’s pretty good on physics: Stephen Hawking: Master of the Universe is debated in the Science Forum.
The Big Bang Theory, however, isn’t about Hawking, it’s a new US comedy. There’s some initial reaction here in the Big Brother Forum and in the Comedy Zone.
Fans of another new US comedy, Reaper, are worried that there are plans overseas to discontinue the series, as shown here [be assured we’re investigating].

How dare they?
Closer to home, Richard and Judy’s video clips have been upsetting the fans (again) – see the discussion on Charlie Bit Me. Criticising the video is ok, but if you criticise R&J, the fans won’t take kindly to it as seen here.
It’s a similar scenario with game show Deal or No Deal as newcomers wonder why older forums members won’t allow them to voice their opinions on the show, whether positive or negative.

And this weeks award for most irritating advert goes to Always.

Last week's Forum Buzz discussed Channel 4 News, particularly the Prince Harry story; The Woman Who Stops Traffic; My Street; Richard and Judy; Paul O’Grady; Friends; Spaced; Time Team; and that advert.

Dear Richmye1, Just to let you know that this was not deliberately done. Channel 4 have a couple of different versions of this film, the one with slightly shorter graphics was due to be transmitted and so the voice over would have played out after the credits had rolled. Unfortunately, due to human error, the slightly longer version was screened and so the voice over came in too early. Channel 4 apologises.

I am delighted that Caroline watched the programme and the production company asked me to pass onto her their best wishes and admiration for what she also endured as a member of the armed forces going through a similar operation. In making the Cutting Documentary about Jan, the production company were advised by the MoD that she was the first officer and first paratrooper in the British Army to undergo a sex change, which was how she was described in the broadcast. This should take nothing away from Caroline's achievements and bravery in similar circumstances.

I have just watched the Italian job on film four. Great movie! some may say better than the original, either way, brilliant. The best part of which is THE ENDING!!During which, you managed to narrow the screen, blank out the dialogue, just to advertise the upcoming event. You ruined the entire build up, Why?? Call yourself a good tv station? you've no class and no feeling for a film buff like me. You obliterated my evening. Thanks a lot

Hi, I'm just wondering who does your research for Cutting Edge because they aren't very good! Tonights programme (20 Mar 08, 2200) claims to be about the 'first ever british Officer in the Armed Forces to undergo gender reasignment'. I think you'll find that as an Officer in the Armed Forces I went down that path over 9 years ago and I trail-blazed a whole load of issues for those people in my situation who have followed me since! Having been deployed on the frontline in Iraq on several occassions as a female officer, and about to deploy for a further tour I feel you are undermining the tremendous journey and difficulties I have overcome to achieve this.
