Forum Buzz: Royals, repeats, and reclaiming the streets
Posted: 01-03-08This week Forum Buzz looks at Channel 4 News, particularly the Prince Harry story; The Woman Who Stops Traffic; My Street; Richard and Judy; Paul O’Grady; Friends; Spaced; Time Team; and that advert.
If you missed them, most Channel 4 shows are free for 30 days on 4oD.

The big news story this week has been the ‘outing’ of Prince Harry in Afghanistan, with Jon Snow’s handling of the story at the centre of the debate. This led to the decision to switch The TV Show (Saturday 1 March) debate from property to Prince Harry. There’s more information on The TV Show debate here.
Jon’s colleague Samira Ahmed’s interview technique also drew some criticism for a different story.
While we are on interviewing techniques, Richard, according to some Richard and Judy fans, just won’t stop interrupting people.
Seemingly one good reason for welcoming back Paul O’Grady is that they won’t have to watch anymore R&J – his fans are counting down to his return.
Another Richard was the star of Channel 4’s New Hero of Comedy series, but when it came to judging the funniness of Ricky Gervais, there was a hung jury in the Big Brother Forum.
It’s unclear whether the question was posed to the Time Team Forum in jest, but the results are interesting: How long do I have to be dead before you can dig me up?
There’s one subject that some people do not find amusing, that’s repeats… or too many repeats… or the wrong repeats. Do you agree with this discussion that there are too many repeats of Friends or Come Dine with Me? What would you like to see dusted off from the archives, Spaced, perhaps?
Two programmes that really caught the viewers’ imagination dealt with an attempt to reclaim the streets of Marlow from near gridlock and a documentary maker who went on a quest to meet her neighbours. See the debates on The Woman Who Stops Traffic in Discuss4 Forum and the Green Forum; and the popular discussions on My Street – which some found a bit of a tear-jerker – in Culture
and Big Brother General.
Do you think programmes like this can change the way we think and act? What about the advert with the guy driving and the mobile phone?
Last week's Forum Buzz discussed Day of the Kamikaze; Wife Swap; Hollyoaks; R&J; How to Look Good Naked; Skins; Shipwrecked; Baby Bible Bashers; and C4 News.
