Forum buzz: Home and away

Posted: 11-04-08

Last week’s Forum buzz focused on war and peace. This week the theme is home and away, as we pick up on discussions about I Am The Elephant Man: A Bodyshock Special; Shipwrecked; Cutting Edge: Cotton Wool Kids; Dispatches Immigration: The Inconvenient Truth; The TV Show; Cook's tour of Spain; Dispatches Undercover in Tibet; Cutting Edge: Sleeping With My Sister; and Poppy Shakespeare.

China, Tibet and The Elephant Man
The biggest talking point in the forums this month, so far, is I Am The Elephant Man. While most people found Huang’s story extremely moving, others found the killing of a pig an unwelcome distraction. See the main thread in the Science Forum, and another discussion in the Big Brother Forum.
Showing a very different side of China, last week’s Dispatches: Undercover in Tibet, sparked a passionate debate about Tibet and some strong reactions to the programme in the News Forum.

On an island far, far away
Meanwhile somewhere lost at sea… after months of impatiently waiting for the new series to start, the Shipwrecked forum is starting to hot up, but according to the first impressions some fans appear to be disappointed by the new islanders.

Spanish cooking, pigs and The TV Show
A Cook's Tour of Spain gets a mixed reaction, as opinion is split on whether Tommi does justice to Spanish cuisine. The first episode of this series also showed a pig being slaughtered, which was the subject of a debate on The TV Show this month.
The TV Show main debate focused on property shows and the role they had played in the meteoric rise of the housing market. There was a live discussion after the show.

Two relationships; two continents
Taking two couples from either side of the Atlantic, Cutting Edge: Sleeping With My Sister dealt with the thorny subject of sibling attraction. This discussion in the Culture Forum was joined by Tommy, from the American couple. The show was also discussed in the Digital Spy Forum.

This is England
Forty years on from Enoch Powell’s infamous speech the subject of immigration is a controversial as ever. In this week’s Dispatches’, when Rageh Omaar tackles the thorny subject in Immigration: The Inconvenient Truth, the debate is taken up in the Dispatches Forum and the News Forum.

Parents that care too much
Cutting Edge: Cotton Wool Kids sparked a discussion in the Culture Forum looking at the extreme lengths some families go to keep their children safe.

In the care of the state
Poppy Shakespeare a gritty drama set in the psychiatric ward of a North London day hospital was greeted with very different opinions by viewers in the Big Brother Forum, Hollyoaks Forum and Digital Spy Forum.

Last week's Forum buzz discussed Cutting Edge: Sex Change Soldier; Iraq’s lost generation; Cutting Edge’s Shannon: The Family’s Story; Curb Your Enthusiasm; Dirty Sexy Money; Time Team; Deal or No Deal; Paul O’Grady; replacing Richard and Judy; and teen programming.
