Film4 receives 30 nominations for The British Independent Film Awards

Rungano Nyoni’s debut feature I Am Not a Witch was the joint second most nominated film with a total of 13 nominations, including Best British Independent Film, Director, Screenplay and Actress. Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri was joint third with 11 nominations, also including Best British Independent Film, Director, Screenplay and Actress. Paddy Considine’s Journeyman was nominated in three categories, and there were nominations for Clio Barnard’s Dark River, John Cameron Mitchell’s How To Talk To Girls At Parties, and Aneil Karia’s short film Work.

I Am Not a Witch’s 13 nominations included five for debut director Rungano Nyoni – Best Director, Screenplay, Debut Screenwriter and the Douglas Hickox Award for Debut Director, as well as top accolade Best British Independent Film alongside producers Juliette Grandmont and Emily Morgan. Nine year old Margaret Mulubwa will contest Best Actress with Frances McDormand and Ruth Wilson. Producer Emily Morgan is nominated for Breakthrough Producer. And the film was nominated for Best Cinematography (David Gallego), Costume Design (Holly Rebecca), Make Up & Hair Design (Julene Paton), Production Design (Nathan Parker), Music (Matt Kelly) and Sound (Maiken Hansen).

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’s 11 nominations include three for Martin McDonagh - Best Director, Screenplay and Best British Independent Film alongside producers Graham Broadbent and Pete Czernin. Frances McDormand is nominated for Best Actress, and Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell both vie for Best Supporting Actor. Sarah Halley Finn is nominated for Best Casting, Jon Gregory for Editing, Ben Davis for Cinematography, Carter Burwell for Music and Joakim Sundström for Sound.

Journeyman’s Paddy Considine will compete for Best Actor, while Luke Dodd is nominated for Best Effects and Nadia Stacey for Make Up & Hair Design.

Ruth Wilson is nominated for Best Actress for her role in Clio Barnard’s Dark River, the third Film4 nomination of five in that category.

Sandy Powell is nominated for Best Costume Design for How To Talk To Girls At Parties.

And director Aneil Karia and producer Scott O’Donnell are nominated for Best British Short Film for Work.
