Online FAQs

What are your commissioning priorities?

All three teams within Channel 4 Online may commission content or services from producers, digital agencies and technology companies. As a general rule, multiplatform commissioning is about high attention innovative projects around TV titles or genres. Production usually orders smaller pieces of content (such as extra web videos from a TV programme) or modules to use on our pages (such as a web app or quote generator). Product management engages companies - usually agencies - for design, user experience, information architecture, user testing.

Everything we do must fulfil Channel 4 Online's Decision Criteria.

What are you not interested in?

It is highly unlikely we would commission projects that don't fulfil our objectives to increase TV viewing, build incremental public or financial value or create data-rich relationships with our audiences.

Therefore, it would be unusual but not impossible for us to commission a project that doesn't have some sort of tie in with our core TV business, whether it directly relates to programme or a project with a purpose of finding new TV talent.

What are the tariff prices for projects you currently commission?

The overall team has a budget of £12m, with £7m allocated to multiplatform commissions and a £2m fund to explore convergent formats. The remainder is for a range of things including design and user experience, platform functionality, content production for our products and moderation.

Multiplatform projects usually range from £20,000 to £300,000 (although very few projects are at that top end).

What is the biggest creative challenge your team faces?

The goal for Channel 4 Online is to deliver big, innovative ideas as excellent user experiences within the tight timescales inherent within the TV production process.

Our challenge is to be selective in what we do; to identify what we "should" be doing from the myriad of "could" ideas that are out there. We commission for real people in their everyday lives.

We want to achieve our objectives, including those around public value, at scale.

What advice would you give to new talent companies keen to connect with your team?

If you have a specific multiplatform idea for a TV title or a genre, or if you are a production company with a programme already commissioned, please liaise directly with the genre multiplatform commissioning editor.

If your programme isn't getting the full multiplatform treatment, the Production team will be responsible for managing the online support for your title.
