History of Britain VR gallery
The Time Team History of Britain programme embarked on a tour of British history via a number of sites the Team has visited in past series. On the way, it stopped off at various other locations and attractions that help to bring that history to life. Now you can enjoy a virtual trip around some of these places at your leisure and revisit them again and again! Just sit back and enjoy our 360-degree panoramic VR gallery. The addresses of some of them, should you decide you would like to visit them for real, are also provided below.
If you don't already have it installed on your computer, you will need a simple free QuickTime download from www.apple.com/quicktime. The minimum version required is 3, although 5 is better. Once installed, clicking on any of the links below should start the VR after a short downloading delay.
Grimes Graves
These Neolithic flint mines, unique in England, comprise some 360 pits and shafts. The Anglo-Saxons called the curious depressions left by the mining activity 'Grime's Graves' the devil's holes of the pagan god Grim. Visitors can descend 30 feet into an excavated shaft and see where the flint for making axes and knives was extracted.

Panoramic VR: The exterior of the Grimes Graves site, with the spoil heaps and depressions left behind by the mineworkings clearly visible.

Segedunum
Segedunum is one of the most fully excavated fort sites anywhere in the Roman empire, and certainly on Hadrian's Wall. Following a £9 million development the site is a major visitor attraction on Tyneside. Altogether it took three and a half years from the commencement of the first excavation, on the site of the bath house in January 1997, to the opening of the museum in June 2000.
The three-storey museum, with its distinctive 34-metre tower offering views over the fort and across Tyneside, includes a large Roman gallery, industrial history and temporary display galleries. Displays include original artefacts, hands-on activities and computer interactives. The Segedunum 'Archaeological Park' also contains a reconstruction of a complete Roman bath house, 80 metres of Hadrian's Wall and a reconstructed section of Hadrian's Wall.
Panoramic VR The outline of the Segedunum fort, which stood here at the end of Hadrian's Wall, is overlooked by the cranes of the Swan Hunter shipyard and the viewing tower of the new Segedunum Museum and Bath House.
