By 1943 the Russians decided to build their own version of the Jeep, which was supplied to them in large numbers via the lend-lease system. The result was a car of rough but robust design featuring a huge 3.25-litre engine. Though heavy, the Gaz 67 had a long range to cope with the extreme distances of the Russian landscape. Its ability to drive all day in any conditions outweighed any performance worries.
As a four-wheel drive, the car was accomplished at cross-country travel. The later stages of the war witnessed a hard-top version for officers and even a waterproofed amphibious model. Nearly 100,000 were built by the time production ceased.
