Designed by the famous Dr Ferdinand Porsche as the Buggy, the Kubelwagen was built on the KDF (Volkswagen) chassis. A two-wheel drive, the car proved light and versatile in all conditions. Examples sent to North Africa were fitted with large balloon sand tyres, while a tracked conversion was also available for extreme environments. The car was cheap and easy to make with many pressed-steel parts. Though the majority were convertibles, a solid-roofed type was also produced. In total nearly 60,000 Kubelwagen were made from 1939 to 1945.
