Submarines
Winston Churchill was famously quoted as saying: ‘Of all the branches of men in the forces there is none which shows more devotion, and faces grimmer perils, than the submariners.’
This deadly and silent method of warfare, where submarines would spend weeks underwater hunting ships to destroy, is probably unmatched for its nerve-wracking cat and mouse games. A special type of person found a submarine their home and these vessels, which were usually terrible seafaring machines above water, were extremely potent weapons below.
Greatly feared by merchant and military shipping alike, the submarine proved highly efficient at denying the enemy ease of movement over water.
