Small craft
Every navy needed small craft to cover vital marine roles in World War II, even if there were huge aircraft carriers, battleships and stealthy submarines. Some ingenious inventions included human-guided torpedoes and special, covert-operations mini-subs.
Two classic small craft stand out, though, as designs which influenced the outcome of the war and represented the most forward thinking in naval warfare: the Higgins Boat Landing Craft and the fast Motor Torpedo Boat.
