With the development of the war, especially in the South Pacific, the aircraft carrier became the dominant naval weapon. Even the most powerful battleships could succumb to aerial attack, and the ability to launch air strikes from anywhere in the world changed the way battles were fought at sea.
Global mobility combined with increased ranges of aircraft meant that no target was safe. A nation with an aircraft carrier could effectively deliver a weapon to any location.
