Before World War II the US Army used a 75mm gun as their standard artillery calibre. This was updated and a new M2A1 (and later A2) artillery piece was adopted. This featured a 105mm howitzer gun enabling personnel to fire rounds at an extremely high angle and pitched on a very steep trajectory, dropping from above on to targets hidden behind hills or buildings.
The Arty 105 was used to great effect and in huge numbers during and after the Normandy campaign. Though generally a towed piece, it was also mounted into the chassis of the M3 medium tank to create the highly manoeuvrable M7 Howitzer Motor Carriage.
