Developed in 1934 as a new fighter to replace the old biplane designs, the first Hurricane flew in November 1935. The pre-war design was exported to other countries, including Romania and Turkey. By 1940 the Hurricane was equipped with the super-powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin XX engine and the MkIIc version was up-gunned with 20mm cannons.
Built in Canada and the UK, the Hurricane became something of a backbone for the RAF fighter wings (more Hurricanes than Spitfires fought in the Battle of Britain), and there were further, well-received exports to Russia, where tank-busting models proved themselves in the Battle of Kursk.
