'Do what thy manhood bids thee do, from none but self expect applause; He noblest lives and noblest dies who makes and keeps his self-made laws,' wrote Richard Burton. He knew what he was up against in confronting the rigid, buttoned-up norms of Victorian society. With his reputation under threat after working undercover for the army spying on the sexual antics of British officers, he was sent to cool off in Goa.
