Isabel Burton, 1831–1896 (2/5)
Isabel Arundell was born in 1831 to a distinguished catholic family and she remained a devout catholic all her life. She often accompanied her husband on his travels, using her connections to smooth negotiations with the Foreign Office, academics and publishers. She was an author in her own right, and wrote books about her travels as well as an autobiography and a biography of her husband, which bore the somewhat optimistic consecration: 'To my earthly master, who is waiting for me on heaven's frontiers.'
