Where does Mick get his jumpers?
In response to the ever-increasing interest in his famous stripey garments, Mick has offered further information:
- The original pully was made over 20 years ago by Lesley, a close friend in Taunton, who was a superb knitter.
- In the first series, Mick wore a blue jumper knitted by his mum.
- Ella Galinski (one of Time Team's assistant producers) suggested that he wear the stripey one, which he did in series 2, 3 and a bit of 4.
- The doll that occasionally appears in shot was made by Mick's friend Rita in Somerset. It wears a mini version of the original.
- A new broad-striped cotton jumper, knitted by Betty (mother of Mick's lieutenant on the Shapwick project Sue Fitton), appeared in series 4-6.
- A pink/purple/blue-striped heavy woollen pully, also knitted by Betty, is reserved for cold shoots.
- Betty created another horizontal-striped version that was first seen in 2000. There was also a vertical version, knitted by Teresa Hall, who took over at Shapwick in Mick's absence.
- All were knitted by friends ('who may or may not be admirers!'), they are washed after each programme and Mick also wears them at his lectures.
Mick assures us that he definitely doesn't need any more!
