The Big Dig, Canterbury, 15 April

Visiting the 'Big Dig'

The first year of the excavations in Canterbury saw the public being given a unique opportunity to see archaeology in action, when a visitors' centre and scaffolding walkway opened up the site to people who wanted to see it for themselves. Now, thanks to the aid of a lottery grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Canterbury Archaeological Trust has been able to reopen the Big Dig at a new location, alongside the new excavation on St. George's Lane.

The Big Dig is just five minutes away from Canterbury East train station and ten minutes from Canterbury West, or visitors can take a 'Park & Ride' right up to the front door. The visitors' centre has a new exhibition of archaeological finds, including pottery, tile, metal and animal bones (including recent finds from Whitefriars), covering the periods from Roman to Medieval. There is also a 'hands on' area for children.

There is a specially-built aerial walkway overlooking what is a vast archaeological site. Visitors can take a tour on the walkway with a steward, who will explain the ever-changing archaeological landscape. This includes further remains of the medieval friary and Roman roads and buildings. There is also a special events programme, including competitions, talks, special tours, craft activities and a 'Finds Day'.

The Big Dig exhibition will be open every day from 10am-4pm until Friday 2 August only. Admission is £2 for adults, £1 for children and concessions. Season tickets are also available for £5 and family tickets for £10, giving visitors unlimited access to the exhibition and unfolding archaeology. Booked groups are welcome at any time.

Call the Big Dig on 01227 452943 for further information and details of forthcoming events.
