Bernard Thomason

Bernard Thomason

Bernard Thomason, who preceded Henry Chapman on Time Team, got his first job in archaeology in 1972 as an air-photo interpreter at Cambridge University. In 1980, he began working with the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (RCHME), now part of English Heritage, as an archaeological illustrator. After this he was employed as an architectural surveyor and illustrator, specialising in producing technical solutions to surveying and illustration, and became part of English Heritage's survey team with responsibility for keeping up to date with equipment and techniques. In this capacity, he concentrated on applying surveying techniques using the satellite global positioning system (GPS) to archaeology, both at work and for Time Team.

Like Henry Chapman, on the programmes he can be seen with the antenna sticking out of his backpack or looking through a theodolite, collecting data for the ground models on which the reconstructions are built. His greatest Time Team moment came on the Mallorca programme in the 1998 series, when he got to speak for the first time in four series!

Bernard Thomason left the programme after the 2001 series.
