trench watch
tuesday wednesday thursday
Day Two

8.30am
Another early start for the cast and crew as we all head back down to the site. At the end of yesterday’s dig a sixth-century spearhead was found in Trench One near where the Byzantine ‘situla’ was found. Diggers all return to their respective trenches.

9am
Two test pits are dug in Trench One, one at the site of the spearhead and the other at the site of the ‘situla’. As the crew are busy with filming and rehearsals, a half-size reconstruction of an Anglo-Saxon ship is launched on the river, where re-enactors are recreating a traditional village scene.

9.30am
Over at Trench Four it appears that a timber building has been found. This is mapped out by the four post holes.

10am
Down at Trench Two (see right), which is now 42 metres long, Phil Martyr, part of the excavation team, is busy recording and charting.

10.30am
Trench Five has been bringing up some flint shapes, which indicate a prehistoric settlement on the natural mound. Bronze-Age expert Francis Pryor (see right) is on hand to discuss the finds with Phil Harding.

11am
Over at the incident room the graphics team are using computers to bring to life Time Team illustrator Victor Ambrus’ drawings of the burials.

11.30am
All morning, historian Robin Bush has been delving into reference books to research the history of the area. There is now a debate as to whether the site is more Jutish than Saxon.

12pm
Trench Six is marked out ready for digging. The re-enactment of the Saxon scene is filmed.

12.30pm
Trench Seven and Eight are marked out in the hope of locating more burials.

1pm
The call is given out for lunch.

In Trench Eight the diggers are starting to find some Roman building materials and flint. The reason for starting this trench is to establish if there was a trackway leading up to the mound. So the site is now turning up some early Roman finds.

2.30pm
Trench Five is extended with the mechanical digger, while Katie Hurst is helping to uncover the skeleton and shield boss [the metal dome from the centre of the shield]. It also looks like there might be another skeleton in Trench Five.

3pm
Over at Trench Seven, digging is under way to uncover some geophysics anomalies.

3.30pm
Phil Harding is finding large quantities of flint, which dates back to the Neolithic Age, while digging in Trench Six.

4pm
Ray Walton puts some final touches to the Anglo-Saxon ‘situla’ he is recreating. He will now start to put the pattern along the edge.

4.30pm
Trench Two is now being extended to uncover a large burnt log near what is believed to be the old river’s edge. Iain Powesland is using the mechanical digger.

5pm
Back at Trench Three, Duncan Brown is cleaning around another spearhead – and there’s speculation that there’s another skeleton underneath it.

5.30pm
Trench Five has uncovered a grave with a post hole that the team believes could have been used to mark the head of a grave.
