trench watch
tuesday wednesday thursday
Day Three: Thursday 30 August

8.30am
In Trench Three, cleaning is finished on the various post holes that were located yesterday evening. Work is also taking place cleaning up the skeleton and shield boss. Over at Trench Six are vast quantities of flint from the Bronze Age.

9am
A new trench, number Nine, has been opened over the ring ditch which showed up last night on the geophysics survey. Back at Trench One there is still loads of work going on, and Carenza is busy cleaning up a grave.

9.30am
Trench Five sees Katie Hurst cleaning up the exciting copper alloy find she discovered last night.

10am
In Trench Six, Phil Harding discusses all the flint finds he made yesterday to camera.

10.30am
Trench Three is extended to reveal the grave. Iain Powesland is on hand to drive the digger and scoop out the topsoil, taking great care not to damage the bones underneath.

11am
Trench Nine is deepened, with Barney Sloane on hand to trawl out any finds.

11.30am
Tony is busy rushing around the site, going from trench to trench and chatting about this morning’s event and finds.

12pm
Helen, Katie and Phil are at the bottom of Trench Five and are explaining the extent of a new belt buckle find, which rests upon a skeleton.

1pm
Lunch is called for the last time on this year’s Live.

2pm
Back on site, diggers, cast and crew are pushing forward for the final leg of the Live. Concentration is on three trenches, One, Three and Five, which are turning up some amazing finds.

2.30pm
Over at Trench Three, there is a clear view of the shield boss covering the skull.

3pm
Just across from Trench Three is Trench One where the original bucket was found by Steve Bolger and where Carenza has turned up a further three buckets. The grave site in this trench looks like it’s been laid out in a decorative pattern.

3.30pm
Camera crew are being called from trench to trench to shoot scenes for tonight’s programme. Down at the web crew office (housed in a primary school) footage is also being filmed.

4pm
Back over at the site, and down in Katie Hirst’s Trench Five some amazing finds are coming up. The brooch is cleaned up and the two skeletons appear to have been buried together.

4.30pm
Margaret Cox and Helen are showing Tony some of the recent finds, including a dagger.

5pm
The end is near. So how does everything look after three days? Take a look at Matthew Reynolds' conclusions.
