Time Team illustratorVictor Ambrus

Victor has been the Time Team illustrator from its inception eight years ago. He explains how he draws such incredibly detailed illustrations:

'I go to every dig with my pile of paper, pencils and brushes and follow the archaeology very closely. From the information that I get fed from the archaeologists and from my visual observations, I am then able to reconstruct the object of the excavations, whether it's buildings, people, burials and sometimes, actual historical incidences.

'The most interesting illustration that I have done for Time Team was of a skeleton we found at a live dig in Bawsey, Norfolk. We identified the skeleton as a nun from the local monastery; she had been fatally attacked by a long knife stroke to the back of the head in a Viking raid. She was left for dead and it appears that the local people who found her attempted to carry out a life-saving operation, unfortunately she didn't survive the operation.'

'I got into Time Team because Tim Taylor saw a book that I had illustrated, when the idea for Time Team was just a twinkle in his eyes. I finally got a call a year later to attend a pilot programme and I have worked on the series ever since. This work always has and, as far as I can see, will continue to fascinate and interest me.'
