The 'Lost Viaduct'
Blaenafon, South Wales

Not so much an archaeological dig as a civil engineering project. The landscape of this part of south Wales has been transformed by industrial activity. Entire valleys have been filled with the waste from mines and other dumping, meaning that Time Team had first to locate the valley over which the 'lost viaduct' would have crossed before the viaduct itself could be found.

It turned out to be buried almost 15 metres beneath the current land surface, requiring by far the biggest excavation the Team has ever attempted.

The photos below show some aerial shots of the excavation site and the area around the Blaenafon iron works, with its surviving buildings, as well as following the progress of the 'big hole'.
