The Man Who Bought A Castle
Alderton, Northants
14 January 2001

VR gallery
If you don't already have it installed on your computer, you will need a simple free QuickTime download from www.apple.com/quicktime to run these VRs. The minimum version required is 3, although 5 is better. Once installed, clicking on any of the links below should start the VR after a short downloading delay. Each VR provides a 360-degree panoramic view of different aspects of the excavation, enabling you to zoom in or out and explore the site from different angles.

Panoramic VR 1: Trench 1, in the castle moat, yielded virtually nothing by way of finds but everything must still be surveyed and recorded.

Panoramic VR 2: Trench 3, in the interior of the castle.

Panoramic VR 3: The castle gateway, where excavation could only take place after a border dispute had been resolved between Derek Batton, who bought the castle, and one of his neighbours. Even then, the digging here was halted for a while until the English Heritage inspector, whose agreement was required, was persuaded that it was an essential part of the investigation of the site.

Panoramic VR 4: The garden trench: it always amazes the Team just how readily people agree to let them dig up their gardens.

Panoramic VR 5: The ramparts: digging Trench 2 over the castle's steep ramparts required climbing ropes and harness for 'Mick the Dig' Worthington.

Panoramic VR 6: The moat and ramparts: even today, almost six centuries after the castle was abandoned, the castle moat and ramparts comprise a formidable barrier.
