The recording of historic monuments is the function of the national heritage bodies that cover England, Scotland and Wales. Part of their role is to survey sites and landscapes and to record standing buildings. In addition to producing many reference publications, they maintain libraries and archives, most of which are open to the public.
English Heritage
English Heritage is the lead body for the historic environment in England. As well as opening the 400 buildings and archaeological sites to the public, English Heritage provides grants for archaeological excavations, and carries out research of its own. Stewart, Carenza and Bernard are all part of this process, surveying and recording archaeological sites so they can be better understood and preserved.

By ringing the NMR or visiting its part of the English Heritage website and giving the name of your town or village, you can be supplied with aerial photographs, lists of local archaeological sites, and historic and recent photographs of buildings in the area. The service is free, although there is a charge for photocopies, photographic prints, etc, and for a fee there is a two-day express service.

ARCHI: the Archaeological Sites Index
www.digital-documents.co.uk
ARCHI, the Archaeological Sites Index, is a fully searchable database of the positions of more than 70,000 UK archaeological sites. The majority of the sites have been sourced from a variety of UK archaeological journals, books, reports and surveys. Most of the sites in the database are linked to an aerial photograph of the site plus a local road map and many are also linked to Victorian Ordnance Survey maps.
The website also hosts a searchable database of UK place names and many other facilities such as an online gallery, glossary of archaeological terms, summary of British historical figures and events and a list of other websites useful to archaeologists and historians.
Archaeological Data Service
http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/
The Archaeology Data Service (ADS) supports research, learning and teaching with high quality and dependable digital resources. It does this by preserving digital data in the long term, and by promoting and disseminating a broad range of data in archaeology. You can search their online databases free of charge, and without any need for registration, provided that the relevant copyright and related use restrictions can be met. In most cases, this means that the catalogue costs nothing to use.
The main searchable resources available are:
ARCHSearch catalogue holdings: Browse the resources available through the ADS catalogue.
ARCHway: The archaeology journal holdings of 25 UK research libraries united into one searchable resource.
HEIRPORT: Search the Historic Environment Portal. Resources available include the ADS, the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historic Monuments of Scotland and the Portable Antiquities Scheme.
HEIRNET Register: Search the register of HEIRs (Historic Environment Information Resources).
Society of Antiquaries Library Catalogue: Search for books and bibliographic references.
Search all AHDS collections: Browse and retrieve data from across the arts and humanities.
