Time Team presenter Tony Robinson

Q & A

Time Team presenter Tony Robinson answers our questions.

What's your favourite Time Team dig?
Turkdean in Gloucestershire, where we found not one but two Roman villas. It was there I had the amazing experience of excavating a Roman mosaic floor – I was the first person to see it for 1600 years!

What's your favourite Time Team find?
It's daft things I like, like a dog's paw print in a Roman tile. My favourite find ever was a little drawing a medieval stone mason had done on the flat back face of an elaborate carved pillar. It was a reminder of what he was about to carve, but it was as though he'd written his autograph especially for me!

What's the most important Time Team discovery?
That it's possible to make a good TV programme about archaeology in just three days.

What's your best Time Team moment?
The look on everyone's faces when we discovered a big gold coin at Codnor Castle.

What's your favourite archaeological site in the UK?
The five square miles around Stonehenge.

And abroad?
The amazing walls around the Mycenaean city of Tiryns on mainland Greece. The remains are so impressive that until comparatively recently people thought they were built by the Cyclops.

Who's your archaeological hero?
Mick Aston.

What's your favourite archaeology book?
Archaeology is Rubbish – A Beginners Guide by Tony Robinson and Professor Mick Aston. It's brilliant.

If you could travel to one moment in time, where to and when?
Jerusalem circa 34 AD – what exactly was going on?

If you could dig one site, what would it be?
Any Mycenaean site on the Peloponnese that's close to a beach and a good taverna.

If you could make one find, what would it be?
I've always been a big fan of King Alfred. I'd love to find proof positive of his stay on the Isle of Athelney in Somerset; not necessarily the burnt cakes, but evidence of the preparations for the armed struggle with the Vikings which was about to take place.
