Time Team digs: The Iron Age

Professor John Collis at Sheffield University provides the overview in this programme, as he and Tony Robinson brave the elements at Danebury Hillfort in Hampshire.

Dispelling the myth that the Iron Age was solely characterised by wars and bloodthirsty activities, with wild savages running around painted in woad, the programme paints a picture of a society that is becoming increasingly wealthy and sophisticated. Taking us back to the period before the Roman occupation, it looks at Iron Age settlements, farming, the organisation of communities, 'banjo enclosures', defences, trade – and cannibalism.

Sites covered include:

The massive earthworks at Caer Vallack and Gear, Cornwall's largest Iron Age site, on the beautiful Helford estuary, and never previously excavated.

The 'bone cave' at Alveston, in Gloucestershire, where the Team found bones that showed signs of cannibalism.

The mysterious underground chamber and associated Iron Age structures of Mine Howe in the Orkneys.

An Iron Age settlement on Salisbury Plain, lying within the area used by the military.
