Periods

What do archaeologists mean when they talk about the Neolithic era or the Middle Ages? What happened in the 'Dark Ages' and were they really dark? And what's the difference between the Bronze Age and the Iron Age?

Here you can find descriptions of the major time periods referred to in British archaeology. We'll be adding new information as the current series of Time Team progresses, together with 'snapshots' from the different periods covered by each programme, so check back regularly to find out more. You can also find out which Time Team programmes have featured which periods, with links to information about every programme since 1997, on the Time Team timeline.
