Janet has been teaching for more than 20 years. She currently splits her time between two schools in Buckinghamshire where she teaches PE.
Janet went to grammar school during the 1960s while her brother went to a secondary modern. At the time, she didn't really appreciate the difference in teaching methods but today has mixed feelings about selective schooling. She cites the example of her son who has decided that he wants to become a carpenter rather than take the usual route to university. Janet feels that in today's schools there seems to be little provision for those who want to learn a skill or a trade.
Modern teaching, according to Janet, revolves too much around administration and paperwork. She believes that her best value as a teacher is found within the time she spends with her pupils. The extra time she spends on this admin is, to her, time that is taken away from her pupils.
Janet very much believes that there are other methods away from formal exams by which pupils can be assessed. For example, by observing their interaction with others and their work ethic within a classroom environment.
Janet hopes that the That'll Teach 'Em kids will enjoy their journey back in time and that they will see her lessons as being a bit of light relief from their other subjects. However, they must be warned that although she respects their individuality she will demand high standards of behaviour and performance from them.
