In the Regency period the navy offered men of very little fortune the opportunity to get rich. During the Napoleonic campaigns, if a vessel was captured the triumphant crew shared the spoils, which could be very considerable. But their noble uniforms although with ludicrous hats gave them a certain distinction, and thanks to the triumphs of Admiral Lord Nelson, they became national celebrities. Captain Glover's rank in the Navy would make him a very good catch. His limited funds at present mean that he should attempt to marry for money.
In Real Life:
Jeremy is from Bangor, Northern Ireland although he now lives and works in London. Initially he worked for an advertising agency where after starting in a junior role he worked his was up to be an art director. He was subsequently head-hunted by a Belfast based international advertising agency, where he worked on commercials before starting up BlackStar, 18 months before the dot com boom which made him his fortune. His company never floated and though he's comfortable, he's not the millionaire he once was. He has started a new business working as a consultant. He has never been married and is slightly worried that he is a bit commitment shy, though it is his intention to find a wife.
