In Regency Life:
The second or third sons of landowners, who didn't inherit and didn't fancy a military career, had to find themselves a "living" sometimes on a friend or relative's estate. They might be well-educated and studious, but their incomes were, more often than not, pitifully small. Working as an occasional tutor, Mr. Foxsmith would have traveled the country estates of the rich, using his family's connections. As the bottom rung of the male social ladder, Mr. Foxsmith, as with the Lady's Companion, will need to play a clever game if he is to secure the hand of a lady.
In Real Life:
Mark was born and grew up in Plymouth, where his parents still live. He went to boarding school, and was latterly diagnosed with dyslexia. The school did not suit him and he left without any qualifications. However, battling against his dyslexia he went on to study Biological Imaging at Derby, and is now a science teacher. He loves science, and exploring regency techniques and has a particular interest in spiders, which he has extensively researched. He now lives and teaches in Bath and has been single since New Year's Eve 2003. He does things because "they sound fun and a bit different" like the Regency House Party.
