Monarchy

The crown of England is the oldest surviving political institution in Europe. In Britain itself, the relationship between monarchy and people created the English national identity and shaped Scotland and Wales.

This website charts how England evolved from a land of warlords to become a constitutional monarchy. It illuminates the lives of the extraordinary men and women who held the throne and those who supported and sometimes fought them. It also highlights battles and other events that were turning points in history and documents that were milestones on the road to political freedom.

Timeline

From AD 400 to Elizabeth II. All the monarchs of England, influential consorts, and battles, events, documents and people who played significant roles in English constitutional history. Linked to each are biographies/descriptions, plus relevant websites, books and places to visit.
