Great Plague

Great Plague

April 1665 to October 1666

In April 1665, the first case of plague occurred in London. Charles II and his court decamped to Salisbury and then, as the disease reached that city, to Oxford. Plague ravaged the capital and the gates of the city of London were closed. The epidemic claimed some 100,000 lives there – a fifth of the population.

For more about the far-reaching effects of this epidemic, see Plague.
