Winners Announcement

First of all, thank you to everyone who entered. Over two thousand entries were received. The overall standard was very high with thoughtful, well crafted, often moving messages.

The recipients of the messages were very varied, ranging from parents and siblings to the military top brass (Rawlinson, Haig, etc.) and even God. Other recipients included the children of Britain (both in 1916 and in the future), fiancés, politicians, Kitchener, and one or two to O2 and Orange, taking the deliberate anachronism perhaps a little too far!

As a result of the wealth of thought-provoking entries it has been decided to award two prizes.

The first goes to ‘stppd’ at Reed’s School, Cobham, Surrey for a message sent to the so-called 'Butcher of the Somme'. This was admired for its satirical combination of comedy and criticism in a very simple form, well suited to the text/SMS medium.

To: General Haig

Wish you were here.

The second is to ‘ddts bleasdale’ for a message to his mother drawing on the writing of Irish-born statesman and philosopher Edmund Burke. Again, a simplicity suiting the medium (comfortably under the 160 character limit), thought provoking and resonant for the future in the aftermath of the Great War.

Dear mother, the only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing, I am a good man and I have done something. T.B

A compilation of the wonderful variety of entries received will be published on this page shortly.

Again, many thanks to everyone who entered – individuals young and old, and a special thank you to schools and the very supportive teachers who made imaginative use of this competition. And many congratulations to our two winners.

iPodThe winners each receive a Video iPod.
