In the long hours between moments of intense action at the front, soldiers had time on their hands – time to dream of home and to dread the coming battle. They also had time – crouched in dank, dark dugouts or resting in reserve trenches – to write down these innermost thoughts. In an era before the internet and web logs, these young men would have used pen and paper rather than a keyboard, and their journals and letters often survived to share their story, even when the authors didn't.
