Mailing lists

If you send an e-mail to a mailing list, everyone in that list receives it. Rootsweb hosts many themed genealogical mailing lists. For example, to subscribe to the Barbados List – a discussion list for anyone with a genealogical or historical interest in Barbados, the easternmost island in the West Indies – send an e-mail to BARBADOS-L-request@rootsweb.com with the single word 'subscribe' (without the quotation marks) in the message subject and body. Do not include any other words or signature lines. To join BARBADOS-D (digest), do the same thing with BARBADOS-D-request@rootsweb.com. In digest mode you will receive one large e-mail every week or so with all the messages sent to the list that week, instead of an individual e-mail every time someone submits a message to the list.

Newsgroups

Newsgroups are online 'bulletin boards' where people can have discussions with like-minded people, by posting messages and replies to ongoing 'threads'. Usenet (Unix User Network) was one of the earliest uses of the internet, and exists seperately from the World Wide Web. You connect to the server where the postings from the past few days are stored. Using software such as Thoth (for Macs) or Agent (for PCs), you can join a 'thread' – read existing messages and/or post follow-up ones – or start a new thread. Newsgroups are supposed to be limited to a single topic, and there is a good deal of 'netiquette' to learn before you stop being a 'newbie' or 'lurker' and taking part in the discussions. You ISP should give you the settings for their news server, but not all servers carry all the groups.

A list of Usenet newsgroups relating to genealogy can be found at www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_use.html.

IRC chat

IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is a way of conversing with people of like mind in real time. You will need some IRC software to take part. The IIGS (International Internet Genealogical Society) has an IRC service with regular UK meetings. More details on www.iigs.org/irc/index.htm.en.
