Under scrutiny
Superstition and belief
Churchill |

To all practical intents and purposes, Churchill was an atheist. He certainly had no strong faith or belief in an afterlife. In his heart, he believed that only a place in history could secure someone a form of immortality – and he made sure of his own place by writing that history himself. As for the relative strengths of Christian faith and science, he wrote: 'Were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science – the science against which it had vainly struggled – the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome.'
