Political leadership

Churchill

Churchill

***

For most of his political career, Churchill was too much of a maverick to show effective political leadership. He left and later rejoined the Conservative party (prompting his comment that 'Anyone can rat but it takes a certain ingenuity to re-rat'). As chancellor of the exchequer, he presided over the disastrous return to the gold standard in 1925, which led to the General Strike the following year. He lost as many elections as he won, most famously the general election of 1945, and his failures were as numerous as his successes.
